Only deer with antlers at least three inches long   may be taken during the firearm season and muzzleloading season from 
Oct. 31 - Dec. 10, except that any-deer may be taken in designated deer management districts by hunters with any-deer permits or a bonus deer permit.

Exceptions:  More than one deer per year may be taken with a bonus permit or during the expanded archery season.

Sunday Hunting is illegal in Maine.

*Bear permit required (resident $28; nonresident, $68; plus agent fee) in addition to hunting license between Aug. 29 through Oct. 28. See law booklet for other recent changes.

**Applies to so-called "set bait" hunting from stand, blind, etc. overlooking bait or food; does not apply to hunting over standing crops, food left from normal agricultural operations, or from natural occurrence, which may be done at any time during the bear hunting season.  Bear bait may be set out 30 days before the opening day of bear hunting season.

YOUTH DEER HUNT DAY - Saturday, Oct. 22, 2005.   Junior hunters (10 years of age or older and under 16)  who hold a valid junior hunting license are allowed to take one deer of either sex with either a firearm or bow and arrow on the youth deer hunting day. If they shoot a deer on the youth deer hunting day, they are prohibited from taking any additional deer unless they have been awarded a bonus antlerless-deer permit or participate in the expanded archery season (designated areas only) with appropriate expanded archery permits. The accompanying adult may not carry a firearm on that day. All laws pertaining to hunting during the open firearms season on deer apply on the youth deer day.


2005 Trapping Seasons:

Bear:  September 1 - October 31

Statewide Trapping for Bobcat, coyote, fisher, fox, marten, mink, muskrat, opossum, otter, raccoon, red squirrel, skunk, and weasel - October 30 through December 31

Early Fox & Coyote Trapping:  October 16 through October 29

Early Muskrat Trapping:  WMD's 1,2,3,4,5,6,9,10,11 only - October 23 through October 29

Beaver Trapping:  Seasons will be set by early fall.
